This article shows administrators how to update search layouts in the system. It discusses the different processes for updating search layouts for standard objects and custom objects.

To access and update search layouts for standard objects:

  1. Access the Setup Menu via the dropdown list at the top of the interface.
  2. Search for the object that you'd like to update using the Quick Find field or access the data object via the Customize section in the menu.
  3. Click into the Search Layouts section for the specified data object.
  4. Click on the Edit Link of the search layout that you'd like to update.
    • Search Results - defines the fields that will appear in columns when running a search.
    • Lookup Dialogs - defines the fields that will appear when looking up the field via a relationship on a page layout.
    • Lookup Phone Dialogs - defines the fields that will appear if you're using a call center.
    • Tab - defines the fields that will appear when clicking on the tab.
    • List View - defines the buttons that appear on a list view.
    • Search Filter Fields - defines the search filters that can be applied for the data object.

Standard objects are defined as the out-of-the-box system objects that are available in Salesforce - Contacts, Accounts, Leads, Opportunities, Cases, etc.

After clicking the Edit Link, select the fields that you'd like to appear as columns for the selected search layout.

You can also select the buttons that you'd like to be available for the specified search layout.

Updating Custom Object Search Layouts

To access and update search layouts for custom objects:

  1. Access the Setup Menu via the dropdown list at the top of the interface.
  2. Go to the Create section in the menu and click on Objects.
  3. Click on the Name/Label of the data object that you'd like to update.

Custom objects are defined as the data objects that are generated by a developer to extend the platform to meet your organisation's business requirements - Events Registrations, Alerts, Agreements, Projects, Time, Invoices, etc.

When you've accessed your selected object scroll down the page to the Search Layoutssection.

At this point you can follow the same update process specified for standard object picklists.
